This stretch of sand is named after the street address of the shopping plaza that sits on the south side of Lahaina. 505 extends from the fishing wharf, where most of Lahaina's boats harbor, down to the south end of the 505 shops. This beach has everything, which is probably why it is so popular with tourists and locals. We start with the shopping plaza where one can enjoy fine dining to casual brunches to a late night dance club. The plaza has Luaus and hula shows nightly. Of course the center has all the necessary facilities, restrooms and even showers on the beach. There is a historical Hawaiian canoe display, statue display and volleyball net at the public park that neighbors the shopping center.
At the north side of the beach, a rock wall extends out like a jetty and encompasses the boat harbor. Outside the rock "wall" is the most popular surf spot in Lahaina called "Break Wall". Here you will find all level of surfers having fun catching waves. Here you will also find the surf lessons taking place everyday, all day. There can be four surf lesson companies at a time sending their students into the beginner friendly waves that are closer to shore. Sometimes six or more people can be on the same "party wave". Spectators will take their seats on the rock wall and photographers take pictures from the rocks and the beach.
The waves are usually pretty small closer to the beach, which makes for good swimming, snorkeling and canoeing. There is a shallow reef so most ocean goers wear reef or water shoes for protection.
To get to 505 beach, you need to head toward south Lahaina. Shaw St. off Highway 30 will lead you to the 505 Shopping Center and a free public parking lot.
